Studio in Place (aka Sip) is a practice dedicated to the designing and making of bespoke furniture and interiors. Our studio and workshop is conveniently based in the heart of East London, on the edge the City.
Sip was founded by Adam Blencowe and Thor ter Kulve both graduates of the Design Products MA course at The Royal College of Art. Adam is primarily a furniture designer, but with knowhow gained through experience working in practices specialising in branded retail and exhibition design. Thor, originally from Holland, has always been a maker and his designs have been produced by several European manufacturers.
Sip’s vision is to keep furniture at the heart of our work, but importantly, to simultaneously consider it within the context of the entire room. Each piece is designed in close co-operation with the client, and to meet their needs and aesthetic.
In our workshop we combine the tools of traditional carpentry, the best of early twentieth century British engineering and contemporary digital fabrication techniques such as CNC. These processes are all integral to the way we design and test ideas. We can therefore quickly produce prototypes and show clients mock-ups of their pieces. We have built up a network of trusted makers who we can call on for specialised skills or on large projects.
